I met up with Mervyn from Heist and a couple of male friends to give the new Dominate hair styling products a test run. Dominate is Australasia’s Number 1 youth styling brand and is the winner of FHM’s best hairstyling brand in the 2011 Fashion and Grooming Awards across Australia and New Zealand. Mervyn himself is a barber with two years of experience under his belt and his expertise lies in creating funky hairstyles like hair tattoos and mohawks (check out his interesting and very awesome portfolio here). Put the two together and this was what we got:
As reviewed by Mervyn, who is much more of a hair maven than I am, the three products have different hold of hair against gravity. The numbers 1 to 5 labelled on the packaging symbolise the strength of the wax with 5 being the strongest. He recommends Dominate for guys with naturally thick and stiff hair. The waxes don’t result in shine but flake when used over other hair products, so it’s best to use them on clean hair. They also rinse out easily with water, so no worries about residue after shampooing.
I couldn’t help noticing that Re-Work smells refreshingly citrusy and zingy. Although the waxes are slightly tinted – Spike-It, pink and Re-Work, light yellow – they leave no traces of colour on the hair once applied. They also combine new technical holding polymer technology and organic New Zealand ingredients like beeswax that strengthen, condition and protect dry and weak hair.
All the products featured here are available at NTUC and Cold Storage outlets in Singapore and retail at S$9.99 for an 85g tub. Last but not least, here’s a photo of me with the barber himself, lest he one day gets too famous to have time to entertain me anymore:
Mervyn can be contacted by email at mervyn@heist.com.sg. You can also give him a ring at +65 96346121. Otherwise, he freelances at U-One Salon at Far East Plaza, #04-131a, Singapore 228213, so do pop by for a hair style that can change your life. Seriously, check out his portfolio.
TODAY’S RANDOM
* This product has been sent to me for my review. Like all my other reviews, everything stated here is objective and honest.
* Mervyn (and Heist) is in no way affiliated with Dominate products. I requested his help in doing this review only because he does my brother’s hair, is very approachable, very talented and I wanted to feature him in my blog. His reviews are therefore also objective and honest.
