Picture Perfect Series: Sun-Kissed Summer Makeup Tips

by Roxanne C.

In this installment of the Picture Perfect Series, I present to you some summer makeup tips. If the thought of summer brings up images of surfers coming back to shore against the backdrop of sunsets by the beach, you sipping cosmos on the deck chair with your girlfriends and the whole Orange County beach party whambam, then this blog entry is for you.

1) Fake That Tan

What is summer without a tan? Skip the tanning booth altogether and head instead for a spray tan session. It’s safer and cancer-free. If you’d prefer a little D.I.Y., I recommend the Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs, a light-weight spray-on makeup that comes in a variety of shades so you’ll find something that matches your skin tone.

2) Get Beach Waves

Beach waves fit any face shape, so go ahead and experiment!

It doesn’t matter if you aren’t heading to the sandy shores to watch the waves crash against safe ground. Waves are for everybody, and summer is the best time to showcase them. You can either get a permanent perm at a professional salon or do it yourself at home with the help of either a curling iron or flat iron.

3) Highlight and Contour

It’s the summer! Show off features where the sun is supposed to hit and shadow others where the sun is not supposed to reach! This is the time to bring out any long forgotten stash of shimmer powders and highlighting creams. Apply shimmer on the cheekbones (try the NARS Illuminator), or make use of shimmer blushes on the apples of your cheeks. Contour the hollows of the cheeks where possible but don’t overdo this lest you end up looking like a lifeless zombie.

4) Keep Lips Natural

To complement the tan you’ve got going, make sure your lips are natural, pink and go well with the rest of your face (and body). Some products that are worth a try are Clinique‘s Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour Balm and the Lip Butter range from Korres. Use something that’s got a slightly glossy effect to give lips a moisturised look. Stay away from deep colours like burgundy or deep reds – winter is over. Remember: Use a balm with SPF prior to these to ensure that you get the maximum sun protection at all times.

5) Minimal Eye Makeup

Chuck away those huge, heavy falsies! Summer and mascara go together. Bronzy, shimmery eyeshadows work best for this season and help to enhance your tan. Avoid tight lining the bottom waterline with black eyeliner, as it will look too harsh for a happy time under the sun. And no heavy bottom lashes too! If you’re going in the waters, the Aqua Liner from Make Up For Ever is a good eyeliner to have.
