Everyone dreams of having a perfect complexion. In every fashion advertorial we see, every model on Vogue’s cover page that stares sullenly back at us and every K-pop girl band music video, it seems as though attaining a flawless, youthful complexion is as easy as ABC. Photoshop makes it look like even the guys have no skin woes.
But things cannot be further from the truth. As I’m writing this in the quiet of my living room, the haze blows through my windows and the current 3-hour PSI reading is 93 (thank you Twitter). Sometimes, a good diet, exercise and proper sleep can only do so much when you’re living in a polluted city and facing non-stop stress at work.
That’s why today, I had the opportunity to ask Dr. Winston Lee, Medical Director of Southbridge Aesthetics Clinic Singapore, some questions about a unique facial treatment that they offer, known as Carbon Laser Peel, that can help you improve the way your skin looks and feels. He also dishes out skincare advice for women of different age groups. If you’ll like to find out more, read on.
Q: What is Carbon Laser Peel?
A: Carbon Laser Peel treatment is a laser procedure for enhancing the skin’s radiance and promoting a smooth, glowing complexion. It helps to reduce imperfections like enlarged pores that originate from the outer skin layer. The treatment improves skin consistency and also removes the outer layer of dead skin, resulting in a glowing complexion with better oil control.
Q: What are the main differences between Laser Peel and other treatments, such as Thermage and Fraxel?
A: The difference is significant. I see Laser Peel as a monthly or regular maintenance treatment with virtually no downtime, for the above indications. Thermage however is to improve skin laxity by tightening collagen and stimulating new collagen synthesis on an annual basis. Fraxel is effective for reducing scars but there is downtime, which ranges from 2-5 days (depending on skin type and treatment protocol).
Q: What are some of the possible side effects of undergoing Laser Peel treatment?
A: There are virtually no side effects except that there may be mild flushing/pink hue for up to a few hours after the treatment, although it usually disappears within an hour. It is a fast and effective treatment. Patients with significant whiteheads/clogged pores may have some mild outbreak (albeit usually shortlived).
Q: For whom is Laser Peel treatment for?
A: I think it’s best targeted for anyone who wants a fresh glowing complexion through gentle and effective exfoliation. It helps to reduce the dullness of skin (especially for people who usually do not do facials), and helps to control oil secretion. Even acne prone patients can have this treatment.
Q: What skincare advice do you have for women in their 20s, 40s and 60s?
A: The needs for patients differ based on age.
- 20s – They must start protecting their skin ahead of time, through using lightweight moisturisers and protecting from sun damage through regular use of sunscreen. The sins of skincare actually start from a young age.
- 40s – Ladies in their 40s will usually have pigmentation issues as well as start having onset of lax skin. They should maintain a regular skincare regimen, seek treatments which replenish hydration such as Hydrafacials and may have to add on effective spot correctors.
- 60s – Ladies in their 60s will require more treatments if they wish to reduce the signs of age. More aggressive treatments and procedures i.e. fillers and threadlifts may be considered, as well as Ulthera and Thermage for their increased problem of skin laxity.
Of course the adage of good lifestyle habits or adequate hydration/sleep and cessation of smoking still stands for ladies across all ages.
